If you’re looking for a good movie to watch with your loved one on Amazon Prime this Valentine’s Day, there aren’t a lot of truly excellent options this year. Even so, I have found 6 titles that are absolutely perfect for this holiday, including a few options that are quite simply some of the best films ever made.
The Red Shoes (1948)

If you’re looking for a traditional romantic film to watch, this is one of the absolute best on the platform. Whether or not you’ve heard of it before now, this Oscar winning title is often included on many “Top 100” lists, and for very good reason.
The Red Shoes follows a young ballet dancer who is struggling to decide between her career and the man she loves. Her anxieties are reflected through her performances on stage, leading to a grand and incredible finish which takes the viewer into a world of endless, seemingly impossible stages.
I could describe how the liminal spaces they create for this film are reminiscent of the kinds of locations you could expect to see in a German Expressionism movie from the 1920s, but I don’t want to lose you with my nerdy takes.
This is one of those classics that I’m surprised we haven’t seen a modern adaptation of just yet, but if they ever do, I can almost promise it will be a Baz Luhrmann production starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Elle Fanning.

All That Heaven Allows (1955)

Although his work has been largely forgotten by modern audiences, Douglas Sirk was once considered a master of romantic cinema. Unlike some of the other directors of his time, he chose to focus on stories that spoke to the social anxieties of a 1950s/1960s audience with an incredible capacity for visual storytelling.
The most striking thing about All That Heaven Allows is its color palette, and the way Sirk chose to use Technicolor was absolutely masterful. While the focus on an aging women feeling left behind by her family, her unforgettable love affair with Rock Hudson’s character is so captivating that you won’t want to look away.
I’ve seen several of Sirk’s films at this point, and I honestly still believe that this is some of his absolute finest work. If you’re looking for a classic romantic film in the style of the greats, this is one of the best options on all of Amazon Prime in February of 2025.

Avanti (1972)

This is hardly one of the better-known or more highly respected films on my list, but I have an affinity for the works of Billy Wilder, and this is one of the more charming romantic comedies he directed later in his career.
Avanti follows a wealthy businessman on his trip to Italy for the purpose of acquiring his father’s remains. Along the way, he just so happens to run into a delightful young lady, and all kinds of hijinks ensue.
While it’s not the most memorable or relatable movie on this list, I stand by it for Wilder’s ability to write witty and fun dialogue and some rather respectable cinematography as well.

My Bloody Valentine (2009)

For all the horror fans out there, you’ll be happy to hear that the remake of this creepy classic will be available to watch this Valentine’s Day. There’s nothing technically brilliant on display here, but it is good, gore-filled fun for those who enjoy the genre.
Ultimately, it would be nice if they had the original film as well, but at least you’ll be able to watch an actual Valentine’s Day movie to celebrate the holiday, right?
What little romance there is in this film is of course overshadowed by a mysterious killer going on a rampage, as with all good slasher flicks. For those who really don’t want to think too deeply about anything romantic this year, this is an excellent option.

Earth Girls Are Easy (1989)

This is one of those movies that I never gave a chance because it just looked too goofy. Eventually I got over myself and learned to love cheesy comedy flicks like this precisely because they are ridiculous, and if you’re like me, then chances are you’ll adore Earth Girls Are Easy.
I know, the title sounds pretty yikesy, but there is an extremely strong 80s vibe to this movie that permeates the entire experience, and it definitely hits the spot for anyone nostalgic for that era.
Jim Carrey, Jeff Goldblum, and Damon Wayans star as aliens who take a strange liking to a young woman played by Geena Davis after crash landing in her backyard.
If you’re looking for something to laugh at that you probably should have given a shot ages ago, this one comes highly recommended.

My Boyfriend’s Back (1993)

Can you tell I’m a Millennial yet?
This silly little romcom from the early 90s was actually directed by none other than Bob Balaban, who was better known both before and after this film for his often minor but very memorable scenes in a number of different noteworthy movies such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and The Majestic.
His directorial efforts have never been too terribly impressive, but I swear there’s something fun and charming about My Boyfriend’s Back. The plot revolves around a teenage boy who comes back from the dead to avoid missing a date with the girl of his dreams.
Yes, it is very cheesy and ridiculous, but it reminds me of similar weird or strange sci-fi/horror comedies that came out of the era such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and My Stepmother is an Alien. If you’re looking for something fun and light, this could just do the trick.
